(Background)
Wonderfest 2012 took place during the Memorial Day Weekend of this year,
from Friday, May 25th through Sunday, May 27th. This show focuses on
Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror, Comic Book, Anime, and Kai-ju - (the
Japanese word for "Strange Beast") figure and vehicular models. A large
number of original pieces and conversion kits are a staple at this show.
Even though I've attended Wonderfest six or seven times to date, it
never disappoints.
I was forced to miss last year’s show, and almost missed this one as
well. However, when I discovered that I had the following Memorial Day
Monday off from work (and would only have to take 1 extra day off), I
decided to attend. (The couple bucks I received back from my tax return
also helped with my decision).
(The
Drive over there)
I jumped on the road shortly after work on the Thursday afternoon before
the show (at 5:00) for my 700 mile, 12 hour tour...uhhh, drive, to
Louisville, Kentucky.
At around 11 pm, the fatigue-factor finally set firmly in. I pulled over
into a rest stop to crash for the night. I’m definitely not as young as
I used to be. In the past, I'd make the trip in 1 fell swoop, arriving
in the weeee hours of the morn.).
The rest stop decision was driven by the fact that I just couldn't see
paying the $40-$60 fee for a hotel or motel room just for 7 or 8 hours
of sleep. Plus, with the upcoming show, I could think of a
W-H-O-L-E L-O-T-T-A things I'd prefer to do with this money.
Seven hours later, I was up and back on the road. I ended up pulling
into the Crowne Plaza Hotel - (where Wonderfest Show takes place) at a
bit after 11 am. Upon entering the hotel lobby, I saw that the party had
already started.
The "Pre-Show" programs were already in full swing.
