Wonderfest 2008 Show Report
(Page Two: The "Under-Renovation" Executive West Hotel)
(Friday, May 19th @ 10:30 am – Check in at the Executive West)
On Friday morning at around 10 a.m., I checked out of the Red Roof Inn and made my way down to the Executive West.
(Thankfully), I was able to check in early, at around 10:30. I made several trips to the room unpacking, and then proceeded back down to the lobby.
I decided to get a bite to eat from the hotel’s restaurant. Although I had missed their tasty breakfast brunch, I was directed by the waitress to try some kind of Kentucky specialty dish, (which was made up of toasted bread on the bottom, sliced turkey breast in the middle and a BUNCH of cheese melted on top of the whole thing. (So much for my cholesterol level).
After finishing my meal, I made my way out to the lobby. I was missing a number of supplies for my upcoming Seminar and I wanted to try to pick them up from a local hobby store. (In addition, this would give me an excuse to check out what a local Louisville hobby store would have to offer. After all, you never know what old, rare, out-of-production kits you might stumble upon. Yeah, I know, "Keep the weekend purchases down to a minimum, Tony!")
After spending 40 minutes trying to find a local Hobby Town Store (that was located 20 minutes away), I finally found it. I picked up some Squadron Green and White putty, some Zap-A-Gap CA glue and some empty paint bottles. Then, I headed back to the Executive West.
Once I arrived back at the room I proceeded to unpack all of my seminar supplies, taking inventory. I went through and organized my tools, materials, and models that I’d be using to help highlight some of my different points. In addition, I reviewed my handout, making a mental note of the ordering of each step, along with how each would be discussed.
Sometime in the afternoon I received a call from Kit, (my roommate for the weekend). He informed me that he was around 30 minutes away.
A short time later he arrived and checked in. After he unloaded and unpacked some of his stuff, we decided to take a trip across the road to the Exposition Center, to check things out.
(Friday @ 5:00 pm – The Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center)
We made the quick 5-minute walk across the street into the South Wing of the Exposition Center.
Kit and I checked out the model contest & dealers room, (that was combined for this year’s show).
We also located the "New Lizard Lounge," (where Friday evening’s Pre-Show Party would be taking place later on during the evening).
I ran into and shot-the-stuff with a fellow modeler and his family, (who was there to see if he could enter his entries into the contest a bit early). Unfortunately, he was told that he’d have to wait until Saturday morning.
After spending around a half an hour at the Exposition Center, we headed back over to the Executive West. Kit and I ended up running into Jay Chladeck, (another Wonderfest regular), and we decided to venture off to see if we could grab a quick bite to eat during the 45 minutes we had before the beginning of the Friday Night Pre-Show Party being held at the New Lizard Lounge.
A quick trip to Mickey-Ds for a quick bite and we were back. We moseyed our way back over to the Exposition Center, and proceeded to hang out at the New Lizard Lounge.
