Chiller Theatre Toy, Model and Film Expo
(Halloween 2002 Show)
(Page Two)
There
was a really good looking 1/6th scale TV-Show Batman and Robin Figure
diorama.
In
addition a HUGE, SCRATCH-Built Romulan Bird of Prey (that was around 3 - 4 FEET
in length) also graced the tables. I got a chance to chat extensively with the
guy who had done that one as well.
I
took my complement of pics.
Then, I
picked up the latest copy of the Model Maniacs Magazine and moseyed back over to the Seminar Room.
The
Seminars
When we had originally arrived Jim O'Neil was conducting a seminar titled: "Anime 202." It was winding
down as we entered the room.
When
I returned to the seminar room (a bit after 12:30) Frank Orlando was conducting
a seminar titled: "Garage Kits Made Easy." During his clinic, Frank talked about
repairing, building and painting Garage Kits. Frank was working on a Catwoman
bust.
The
information that Frank shared was both interesting and informative.
He
ended up going beyond his 1-hour allotted time slot. There was no problem with
this though, since I was anxious to see him airbrush his customized flesh
colored acrylic paint that he had mixed onto Catwoman’s face. (In addition, I didn’t think that I was
going to need the full hour that had been allocated for my
seminar).
At
just before 2 pm Frank finished up and I began. I passed out handouts and
proceeded to talk about some hints and tips of mine on gluing plastic kits
together and cleaning up their seams.
The
half-hour flew by pretty quickly. As I finished packing up Brad Frikkers, (a
Smooth-On representative) arrived. He began setting up for his "Molding and
Casting 202" seminar.
We
deposited my stuff back into the car and quickly returned, heading over to the
Vending Rooms.
Vendor
Rooms and displays
Several regulars whom I stopped by to chat with were Tom (“Bwain”) Parker and his
partner in crime Henry. Tom was (among other things) working on a decal sheet
and some miscellaneous parts to enhance those instruments found in Revell’s
Robin kit.
I
also dropped by and talked (briefly) with Terry Web, (the AFM Editor). I ended
up picking up the two latest issues of his magazine.
In
addition I visited John Diaz’s table.
Although
it was hard to tell, it appeared that this year’s crowd was slightly smaller in
size than traditional October Chiller crowds. I do know that it wasn’t quite a
squeeze getting through some of those isles in the Vending
Rooms.
Five
o’clock approached waaay too quickly. We made our way over to the Lecture room
and caught the end of Jay North's "slightly" dark talk on "Serial Killers I have
known." (Jay was the actor who played Dennis the Menace in the same-named show
back in the 50’s or 60’s).
The Contest Results
At slightly after 5:00 pm the contest awards presentation began. As usual, mental fatigue had caught up with me so the names just flew by quickly.
Anthony
ended up getting a certificate of merit for his entries. This, coupled with the
numerous prizes that Junior Category Sponsor Polar Lights had donated made
Anthony once again make out like a bandit.
At
the end of the Awards Ceremony we quickly made our way back up to the third
floor. We waited (an excruciating long time) for Anthony to make his way up the line
to claim his prizes, retrieve his entries and get his picture taken for an upcoming
issue of the Model Maniacs Magazine. Then, we headed home.
Conclusion
This was another enjoyable Chiller event. Although Michael appeared to be a bit bored with the show, I still think that both he and Anthony enjoyed themselves. I know they both “came to life” when they saw a Luke Skywalker “clone” pass by – (sorry about that).
Even
though the number of kits in the contest was down a bit, it was still nice to
see so many new pieces out on display.
I
spent a little money, picking up a HUGE Master Grade Gundam for myself, along
with a different MG for both Anthony and Michael. In addition, I obtained
several modeling magazines, a GK figure (Spiderman) and got a chance to chat
with a number of acquaintances there.
All-in-all,
a good time was had by all!
