Chiller
Theatre’s Spring 2002 Show
(Page Two)
Saturday’s
Show
On
Saturday morning, I picked up Gene and headed back up to the show. His and my
different interests are prime examples of the variety of reasons why folks
attend this popular, fun-filled event. I go to Chiller mainly to pick up
hard-to-find models, check out the models entered in the contest, attend the
model seminars and to hang out with folks I know who are there. Gene, on the
other hand really likes checking out and talking to the numerous actors and
actresses who routinely attend this show.
Once
we arrived I promptly went up to the contest room and proceeded to oooo-gle an
ahhhh-gle over all of the models that were out on display. As is the case with most Spring Chiller
Shows, the overall number of entries was a bit light in comparison to their
October Show. There were probably around 80 - 90 models entered. However, as is
also the case with this show, the quality and workmanship of the pieces was very
high.
In
addition to the model entries, there were also three drawings and paintings out on display.
I
took my compliment of pictures and went over to chat with Ed.
He
had the new Model Maniacs Magazine out for sale. I picked one up.
Found within is an article that I wrote, titled: “The State of Affairs on the
Garage Kit Industry.” I had drafted questions pertaining to this topic and
conducted interviews with a number of the vendors who were at last year's
October Chiller Show. The fruits of my labor (and the thoughts of those whose
brains I had picked) were what resulted.
After
leaving the contest room I went back down to check out the Vending area once
again. It was jammed packed with people, with little walking (or breathing) room
in the isles.
I
picked up a couple of Gundam “action-figure” toys that my sons expressed
interest in, along with a discontinued IMAI Star Blazers space fighter for
myself.
I
then proceeded to track Mark down and went to hang out with him and his roomies
in their hotel room.
Mark
had brought with him his latest sculpting creation that he was working on in the
room. (He had some minor repairs to do on some features that had gotten damaged
when the piece was in transit).
An
hour or so later I was starting to run down and run out of gas. (The two day
Chiller marathon and the small amount of sleep I had gotten in between were
finally catching up to me).
I
went down to the lobby, located Gene and we jumped back on the road to go
home.
Conclusion
I
never get tired of the Chiller Shows. The new batch of models that are displayed
in the contests are always fun to view. Also, it's always exciting to see what
new GK models make their appearance at this show.
The
Chiller Theatre Expo returns this October 25th through the
27th, just in time for another group of zombies, ghouls, monsters and
scream queens to emerge from the bowels of New York City, wreaking havoc on the
Meadowlands.
